About John Masters

John Amato, former stylist and owner of Amato Hair Studio in Beverly Hills and Teri LaVerne, former model and salon partner with John. It was their goal to revolutionize the mainstream hair care industry by creating innovative products that offered natural luxury, and the same performance salon professionals depend on. During their 22 years in the beauty industry they developed relationships with cutting edge labs, chemists, manufactures, "fair trade" resources and top stylists. Their aim was to create a collection of real and quiet distinction, which gives lasting results and takes personal care products to a whole new level of excellence.

Mission

To combined the wealth of nature with the latest technology and ultimately bridge the gap between salon-professional and natural hair care lines, developing a ingredient friendly alternative without sacrificing performance. The concept was to develop a regime that consist of 3 professional-quality products for a spa experience at home as well as a maintenance routine that would reverse the signs of everyday styling and chemical services. Providing a natural color complex that would preserve hair color while enhancing the appearance and shine of all hair types without the use of toxic ingredients and artificial moisture replacements. Rare El'ements mission is to source and produce revolutionary products that are luxurious, chic, eco-friendly and socially responsible.

Ingredients to Avoid

When purchasing your hair products, here are six ingredients to avoid:

1. Silicons: are synthetic replacements for moisture and have the potential to create excessive build up on the hair, resulting in dry hair unable to receive moisture due to the presence of the layer of film. Yet, because the hair appears shinier and softer, most users of silicones are pleased with their hair until they learn it is actually damaged from all the dryness. The use of synthetic products may be helpful in the short term, but it has plenty of long term disadvantages.

2. Petroleum (oil) based chemicals: Often derived from petroleum, but may be derived from vegetable substances found in Sodium Laureth/Laureth Sulfates or Amony Lauryl/Laureth Sulfates. The basic problem is that it is too super-concentrated and processed to be good for you or the planet. It is literally the same ingredient used for degreasing automobile engines. Can cause symptoms from mild skin reactions to dandruff to full on allergic reactions.

3. Sodium laureth sulfates or sodium lauryl ether sulfate: Is an inexpensive and very effective foamer that can cause irritation after extended exposure. Products containing these substances can affect those prone to eczema and other irritants. When rinsed off, the product will have a cleaned area but will have also taken away valuable moisture.

4. Fragrance: Causes hormonal disruption and have been found to produce cancer and birth defects in lab animals. The word fragrance on a label can also hide a number of other chemicals, often petroleum-based, since fragrances are considered proprietary and companies do not need to disclose what is actually in them, allowing too much room for bad stuff; it's best to avoid anything with the word fragrance unless it specifies that it's only from essential oils.

5. Methyl, Propyl, Butyl, and Ethyl Parabens: The most commonly used preservatives. Parabens are 'estrogenic' (meaning they mimic estrogen hormones) and can be absorbed through the skin. These chemicals may be linked to breast cancer, can be skin and eye irritants, and are derived from petrochemicals.

6. Propylene Glycol: A cosmetic form of mineral oil in automatic brake, hydraulic fluid and anti-freeze. In skin and hair products it works as a humectants, which is a substance that retains the moisture content of the products by preventing the escape of moisture and water. It is used for slip and to keep products from drying out. Has been said to cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage.
