Compact for Safe Cosmetics

Lisa Schmidt (owner of Lilou Organics) has signed the The Compact for Safe Cosmetic campaign, organized by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics website.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is working to commit cosmetics companies to phasing out toxic chemicals and making cleaner, greener, healthier products for all of us--and we need your help!

Everyday products such as shampoo, deodorant and make-up contain chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other serious health consequences. Why? Because cosmetics manufacturers are allowed to use almost any chemical as an ingredient without government approval.

Cosmetics should be made with safe, non-toxic ingredients. Some leading companies agree. So far, more than 400 companies have signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, a pledge to make safe products. Now it's time for all cosmetics companies to do the same.

Below is The Compact for Safe Cosmetics that Lilou Organics has agreed to:

The Compact for Global Production of Safe Health & Beauty Products

Our company pledges:

That all of the cosmetics and personal care products made by our company anywhere in the world will meet the standards and deadlines set by the European Union Directive 76/768/EEC to be free of chemicals that are known or strongly suspected of causing cancer, mutation or birth defects.

To implement substitution plans that replace hazardous materials with safer alternatives within three years. We will accomplish this by:

  • Conducting an inventory of potential chemicals of concern in our products (or byproducts) to determine their toxicity to living things, their persistence in the environment, their ability to increase in concentration in the food chain, their contamination of our bodies, or qualities they possess that pose hazards including carcinogens, endocrine disrupters, sensitizers, mutagens, reproductive toxins, developmental toxins and neurotoxins.
  • Developing an aggressive substitution plan and timeline: to move to safer materials, prioritizing for substitution those compounds internationally recognized as most toxic; to provide for an ongoing review of safer materials and chemicals as effective, cost-competitive alternatives are available, and; to work with upstream suppliers to provide toxicity data on chemicals in products.
  • Publicly reporting on progress to meet these goals.

Lilou Organics encourages companies and consumers to become more informed and support this campaign and endorse the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics Platform.

Campaign for Safe Cosmetics Platform

We call on all manufacturers of personal care products and cosmetics to join the Compact for Safe Cosmetics and agree to the following:

  • Meet the standards and deadlines set by the European Union Cosmetics Directive.
  • Agree to make safe, non-toxic, reformulated products readily available in every market they serve - both domestically and globally.
  • Complete an inventory of potential chemicals of concern in products (or by-products) to determine their toxicity to living things, their persistence in the environment, their ability to increase in concentration in the food chain, their contamination of our bodies, or qualities they possess that pose hazards.
  • Develop an aggressive substitution plan and timeline to replace emerging chemicals of concern with safe alternatives.

We call on the Food and Drug Administration to:

  • Prohibit the marketing of all cosmetics and personal care products containing known or probable human carcinogens, reproductive toxins or mutagens.
